Atomists

Another reference to "atomists," albeit without a capital initial. Section V of "Un-Man" informs us that Etienne Fourre:

was in the French Resistance during World War II;
liaised with the European undergrounds of World War III;
fought fascists in the Years of Hunger;
fought atomists in the Years of Madness;
fought jihadists in the Near East;
became head of the UN secret service;
initiated the Rostomily Brotherhood;
assassinates opponents.

Although we still do not know what the "atomists" stood for, we receive confirmation that they belong on the list of enemies between Communists and Americanists.

The incorporation of World War II into Fourre's career neatly links twentieth century history with future history. Fourre is still active at eighty, thanks partly to medical advances. But is his strategy of coups and assassinations the right way forward? Can any good ends be attained by such means?

Kaor, Paul!

And I still wonder who the heck the "Atomists" or "atomists were? Do these ever so slightly different names refer to the same people?

I share your distaste for the methods of coups and assassinations practiced by Fourre and the UN Secret Service and "UN-men." At the same time, however, I do believe that sometimes very hard methods have to be used to prevent far worse things from happening. We do live in a chaotic and strife torn world, unfortunately.

And your listing of jihadists as one of the groups Fourre fought is all too FAMILIAR. The Muslim Brotherhood, Al-Qaeda, and the Islamic State are merely among the most infamous of the jihadists we are seeing today. And THEY have no hesitation using the most ruthless or subversive methods possible for advancing their goals and ambitions.

Sean,
I think that the Muslim Brotherhood is a moderate-militant mix?

Not in the least! The Muslim Brotherhood was founded by Hassan al-Bannah in Egypt in 1928 to further the goal of a worldwide Islamic caliphate by any and all means possible. And the MB was inspired by the tactics used by Lenin: two steps forward, one step back (if necessary), use peaceful means if violent methods will not work, or intrigue, subversion, terrorism, etc., if those will work. The MB has provided the ideological background for terrorist Muslim groups all over the world.

A good recent study of the Muslim Brotherhood and Islamic jihadism is Andrew McCarthy's THE GRAND JIHAD. Mr. McCarthy was one of the prosecutors who tried the first World Trade Center bombers of 1993. Which caused him to become interested in jihadism, Sharia law, and its contemporary advocates.

Paul and Sean:
"Such a man, thought Naysmith [about Fourre], would in earlier days have stood behind the stake and lash of an Inquisition, would have marched at Cromwell's side and carried out the Irish massacres, would have helped set up world-wide Communism...."

In short, a fanatic, different from the fascists and jihadists only in that he now serves a cause which may ultimately -- by which time he'll be dead -- have the chance to be more easy-going and benevolent ... two things which Fascism and Sharia will never be.

Hi, David!

Now that you mentioned him, I agree with what you said about Etienne Fourre. A fanatic who only just HAPPENED to serve a cause which in the Psychotechnic series happens to be better than the others. I agree as well that totalitarian systems, Fascist or Muslim, will never be easy going or benevolent.
