Nightmare

SM Stirling's Domination of the Draka is like a nightmare from which it is impossible to wake up:

when the Draka military governor of northern France and her staff are poisoned at a banquet, ten thousand serfs are impaled along the avenues of Paris;

when Barcelonans rise and kill hundreds of Citizens, the city is nuked;

Finnish and Russian partisans are hunted like animals;

Draka children throw rocks at a "saboteur" starving to death in an iron cage hanging at an intersection;

when India withdraws from the Alliance for Democracy, it is immediately invaded and falls under the Yoke.

In the case of the "saboteur," there are two injustices: torturing a man to death and raising children to participate. It is good to know that, despite such systematic barbarism, some OSS agents remain willing to infiltrate the Domination and there is still an underground resistance willing to cooperate with them. We unreservedly enjoy reading about these people whereas the Snakes leave a nasty taste in the mouth.

(I wrote this post on Saturday evening but am posting it on Monday morning because Lancaster has had floods and a blackout.)

Kaor, Paul!

I completely agree! The Domination of the Draka is a nightmare! A hellish scenario of what a TRULY COMPETENT tyranny might be like. Mercifully, human history has not (yet) seen such a thing.

I'm going by memory here, so I might be wrong, but I think you erred a bit about the caged saboteur being starved to death. My memory is that it was the children of SERF cadres who stoned this unfortunate, not Draka children. It was part of the Draka's depraved ingenuity to make many, many serfs WILLING to serve them.

And one thing the secession of India from the Alliance and its immediate invasion and conquest by the Domination made plain was, that imperfect as the Alliance was, the Domination was vastly worse! That idea has obvious analogies and applications to our times as well. Such as the current, ineffectual approach being taken by the West to jihadist fanaticism.

And I'm sorry bad weather has been causing so much trouble for the Lancaster area. I hope no one was killed or seriously injured.

Sean,
Thank you. The police did find one man drowned in a river.
