History Branches

Poul Anderson, Operation Luna (New York, 2000).

Chapter 5 answers a question that I asked earlier. On the one hand, people on the goetic Earth now "'...know history branches and rebranches, a quasi-infinity of coexisting, equally real universes.'" (p. 42) On the other hand, they have not yet been able to contact any of "'...the worlds that are almost like this.'" (ibid.) Ginny thinks that this is because the differences are too subtle for contact to be possible.

Steve Matuchek tells us:

"We never got an answer to the telepathic messages we tried to send. Well, maybe nobody who received them could figure out how to respond." (ibid.)

So his attempted broadcasts to other timelines had preceded the events of Operation Luna. In one of those, he had said:

"To you out yonder, this may appear nothing but a dream...But think over what you receive. Ask yourselves how you could have a simple dream that was quite like this one." (Operation Chaos, p. 2)

Maybe all that happened was that the dream inspired a work of fiction?

  1. Kaor, Paul!

An amusing thought, that a "real" Steven Matuchek's telepathic broadcast inspired Poul Anderson to write OPERATION CHAOS! But what if it was truly REAL?

And "goetic" scientists from the OPERATION universe eventually did manage to figure out how to go to other universes, as we saw from seeing Valeria Matuchek at the multiversal Old Phoenix Inn.
