My favorite James Bond novel is You Only Live Twice because of its unique (in the series) Japanese setting, because it recounts the final conflict with Blofeld and because it is the point at which the series most nearly becomes a serial. It matters what had happened in the previous novel and what is going to happen next.
Anderson describes an exotic setting or settings in each volume of his series. The People Of The Wind is pre-Flandry. Flandry's final conflict with Aycharaych is in A Knight Of Ghosts And Shadows. The Technic History remains not a serial but a series in which each installment can be read separately although the cumulative effect of all forty three installments is way more than the sum of the parts.
