on June 26, 1894, Manse Everard arrived at the London office of the Time Patrol to begin his first mission for the Patrol;
in 1895, The Time Machine by HG Wells was published;
we guess that 1895 was also the year from which Wells' Time Traveller set off into the future.
Everard meets not the Time Traveller or any of his nine dinner guests but the large, pompous, whiskered, monocled, Oxford-accented Mainwethering. This was also the occasion when the reality of time travel first hit Everard (see here) and when a certain private inquiry agent unsuspectingly brushed shoulders with Time Patrol agents.
A momentous period in many ways.
