Two Orphans In Exotic Settings

Honey Rider
Heroine of Doctor No by Ian Fleming.
Has lived in the cellars of a ruined Great House in Jamaica since she was five.
Collects shells.
Becomes James Bond's lover.

Diana Crowfeather
Central character of The Game Of Empire by Poul Anderson.
Keeps her sleeping bag in a ruined temple on the planet Imhotep.
Runs errands and guides tourists.
Is Dominic Flandry's illegitimate daughter.

And I can probably find parallels between any two texts at this time of night.

Kaor, Paul!

The parallel to Honey Rider I thought was Ella McIntyre, one of the characters in Anderson's "Warriors From Nowhere." Both Honey and Ella came from semi-aristocratic families which had fallen on evil days. Both these families had settled in colonies. Both women were to be of great assistance to intelligence agents, etc.

Sean,
Another parallel.

THE GAME OF EMPIRE is a homage to Kipling's masterpiece KIM, by the way.

Dear Mr. Stirling,

And Poul Anderson mentioned that in his reply to a LONG letter I wrote to him about THE GAME OF EMPIRE.

There are a limited number of tropes. It's what you -do- with them that counts.

Dear Mr. Stirling,

And I greatly admire the ingenuity with which Kipling, Anderson, yourself, and other writers have used these tropes!
